UPDATE!!!!
Hey Everyone!
So, it’s been a while (as in like 4 years, a while), and I should’ve updated this back in 2019 when everything transpired, but the Johns Island Farmers Market changed ownership and as a result it changed its name. It is no longer the Johns Island Farmers Market, but is now the Sea Island Farmers Market.
The great thing is, it’s still in the same location!
Based on what I can see on their Facebook profile and Website, things seem to be going very well for the new owners. So that is great news to me! I love to see a local market thriving, especially in the strange times we find ourselves.
I really need to get out there again and get some pictures of the various vendors and do an update with the new owners to promote them here on the Back Road Warrior.
That said, I still highly recommend this market and encourage visitors to the South Carolina Lowcountry to try and make a trip out to the market while they are in town. You won’t regret it!
BELOW IS INFORMATION ABOUT PREVIOUS OWNERSHIP OF THE FARMERS MARKET, THE HISTORY OF ITS FOUNDING, AND IT’S CHARMING ATMOSPHERE
[NOTE: Outside the change of name and ownership, I believe this market is still a quaint and wonderful community market worth your time to visit. I hope to update this with more current information in the future]
In the heart of Johns Island, on the grounds of the Charleston Collegiate School, sits a hidden treasure of the farmers market variety known as the Johns Island Farmers Market (now Sea Island Farmers Market).
Launched in January of 2014 by Frasier Block and Blue Laughters (and now under new ownership), the market rests in a clearing surround by majestic hardwood trees. The market brings together local farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs in a rare year round farmers market.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting. It has the air of stepping back into a time when communities gathered around the markets to catch up on the local news, do some shopping, and spend the day connecting with their neighbors. Children can be seen running and playing as their parents figure out what they will stuff their grocery bags with that particular week.
Picnic tables and tents, along with gentle marsh winds and shady oaks, invite customers to come grab a coffee, do some grocery shopping, and sit down for a bite to eat while they listen to local musicians sing and play.
Oh yeah, it’s pet friendly too! So don’t leave your best friend at home!
As you meander the vendor tents you will find a plethora of things to taste and buy from freshly baked breads, pastries, and other other sweet treats to freshly foraged herbs and mushrooms, pet treats, handmade soaps, heirloom vegetables, pressed olive oils, homemade jellies and jams, locally printed t-shirts, handwoven garments, handmade pasta, cheeses, eggs, kombucha, CBD products, dried spices and herbs, leather crafts, handmade jewelry, fair trade items, wooden crafts, Greek delights, coffee, and a whole lot more!
And you can’t forget the almighty boiled peanut! It’s a true southern delicacy that simply cannot be passed up on.
The list could go on.
Unlike many other farmers markets in the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Johns Island Farmers Market is open year round.
Every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9:30AM to 1:00PM locals and tourists alike can enjoy this little gem in the woods. It truly is a unique opportunity to learn about what is locally in season, and to step back, slow down, and enjoy the weekend ahead of you.
After your trip to the market, you can also hit up Angel Oak or Kiawah Island to round out a relaxing weekend in the South Carolina lowcountry!
